Needle movers are the tasks that are going to bring you closer to your goal. They “move the needle” in the direction you want to be travelling and cause big shifts. But here’s the thing: needle movers are rarely the tasks that feel easy. They are usually tasks that you might be afraid of or resistant to do. They scare you and push you outside of your comfort zone.

Why are needle movers important?

We tend to do a lot of things and feel “busy” a lot of the time, but that doesn’t always equal the greatest results. It’s easy to get tied up in things that aren’t needle movers and tasks that, in reality, don’t actually allow us to progress. You need to identify your needle movers to recognise what to work on and how to grow.

Don’t confuse activity with productivity. Many people are simply busy being busy. Robin Sharma

<aside> 📌 Exercise 1. Grab a piece of paper and brainstorm all the things you think contribute to you reaching your BIG goal. Write down everything and anything you can think of, even if some tasks may seem arbitrary. 2. If you had to choose three things from the list, what three would you choose? Remember that these three tasks are likely going to be the ones that bring up the most discomfort. Now, circle your top three action points. These are your baseline and non-negotiables and they should be your focus week in, week out. 3. Prioritise. If I could only do ONE thing, what would it be? Choose your TOP action point. Here’s what will come up: you’re not going to want to decide, and your brain will tell you that every point is important. It’ll feel hard to choose, but I want you to go with your gut feeling. This is your task that must stay front of mind for the year.
